Prescribing Brand Name Drugs Instead Of Generic Drugs Costs Medicare $1.7 Billion A Year, Study Finds

While branded prescription drug dispensing accounts for only 5% of Medicare Part D drug claims, according to a new study published today, if brand-name drugs were swapped for generic drugs it could save $1.7 billion a year. 

The study, published in the journal JAMA Open Network,looked at Medicare Part D prescription drug claims from 2017, which included 169 million filled prescriptions.
